Free Range Sleeping

In keeping with her advanced age, Monroe "I'm Three" Cook recently graduated to a BIG GIRL bed.

Monroe had a crib in her nursery from birth to about a week ago, so this was a major change. We prepped by having her practice sleeping in the floor on a twin sized mattress, so we were able to put her back in the crib as a consequence for getting out of bed too often. Right around her birthday she had made enough progress on staying in her bed that we felt ready to go all the way and disassemble the crib. So the day after her birthday, My mom and dad took Monroe to ride her new bike in the park, go swimming, and watch movies while we got to work on a huge toy purge / room rearrangement.

We chose a mini loft bed for Monroe. Our hope was to increase her play space without seriously threatening safety (given that the bed is only about 3 1/2 feet high.) So far so good...Monroe has been very prudent in her climbing and has observed the rule of only crawling or sitting on her knees while on the top bunk very very faithfully. I am still a bit nervous... as a mother will be, despite all precautions.

The highly reinforced shelf above the bed contains only soft, snuggle-friendly objects. The photos have plexi instead of glass. Interestingly, preparing for an earthquake is very similar to preparing for the nighttime roaming of a restless toddler, so those precautions do double-duty.

The shelves below the bed are bolted to the frame. The shelves are backless, so the toys & books can be accessed from under the bed as well! We liked the way the shelves created a more enclosed feeling in the under-bed play area.

The area under the bed has a few toy bins and a small bookshelf. One side is the reading corner, with Ollie the Octopus who cradles us when we read our bedtime stories.

Now my big girl has a real big girl's room!
